Prayer To Remember You Are A Child of God

It can be difficult, if not impossible, to see past our imperfections and see ourselves as someone created in the Image of God, someone who is love, someone full of grace and potential.  I came across this prayer (below) and I hope that it reminds you of who you are and whose you are.

In Christ,

Rev. Evan

Lord, sometimes when I look in the mirror I’m not too happy with what I see. Please let me see me the way you made me, beautiful and perfect just as I am. Help me to hold this image in my mind and heart as I follow my life’s path. Allow others to witness your light shining through me as I walk with confidence, grace and a smile on my face. Amen.

On October 2, I spoke at the Christus Ministry Retreat held at Saint Elizabeth Hospital. I was able to share my story which led to the writing of my book. Below are some pictures of the day. I am thankful to Saint Elizabeth and the staff of the Spiritual Care department for their hospitality and invitation.

World Communion Sunday 2015

20150930_120207

Today, many churches around the world celebrated World Communion Sunday. At First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we sang a powerful hymn entitled “For Everyone Born, A Place At The Table” the words are below.  They speak to the importance of justice and grace in the world around us and how that can be found at the Table.

May we remember the unity we have in Christ as the Church celebrates and the remembers the life, ministry, death and glorious resurrection of our Lord, Jesus the Christ.

1 For everyone born, a place at the table,
for everyone born, clean water and bread,
a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing,
for everyone born, a star overhead,

Refrain:
And God will delight
when we are creators of justice and joy,
yes, God will delight
when we are creators of justice,
justice and joy!

2 For woman and man, a place at the table,
revising the roles, deciding the share,
with wisdom and grace, dividing the power,
for woman and man, a system that’s fair, [Refrain]

3 For young and for old, a place at the table,
a voice to be heard, a part in the song,
the hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled,
for young and for old, the right to belong, [Refrain]

4 For just and unjust, a place at the table,
abuser, abused, with need to forgive,
in anger, in hurt, a mind-set of mercy,
for just and unjust, a new way to live, [Refrain]

5 For everyone born, a place at the table,
to live without fear, and simply to be,
to work, to speak out, to witness and worship,
for everyone born, the right to be free, [Refrain]

First Sermon at First Christian Longview: When Words Are Just Words

On September 13, I gave my first sermon at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Longview, Texas.  It was entitled “When Words Are Just Words” and it was based on Mark 8:27-38.

Remembering 9-11-2001

It is hard to imagine that the events that took place on September 11, 2001 was 14 years ago. I was 18 and a freshman in college. I had slept in, got up and went to chemistry class. On the way to class my neighbor in the residence hall stopped me to tell me the news, planes had hit the Trade Center and the Pentagon. I couldn’t believe what was going on, questions swirled in my head.

Classes were cancelled after chemistry and the only thing I remember from that class was the professor reminding us of a chemical principal where everything eventually goes back to equilibrium or “normalcy.”  I’m not sure if we are there yet, maybe one day.

Each year on this date I am reminded of the lives lost, the people who risked everything to save those in danger and the human condition. The human condition plagues all of humanity and is the one thing that the gospel must answer; 9/11 is a reminder that humanity at it worst is destructive while at its best it is selfless.

May we remember those selfless moments that punctuate the memories of this anniversary.

May God’s love and peace reign now and forever.

May we never forget.

In Christ,

Rev. Evan
